Some little details escaped us, since the last time we’ve discussed what was happening on Scream: The Series. MTV ordered 10 episodes that will air in July, according to the Twitter of screenwriter Jaime Paglia. He posted a photo of the writers’ table, that was erased yesterday, but you can see it above!

It was also erased… We guess that there is nothing wrong about interacting with a fansite that praises and promote your work – especially if both creators of the original movies do…

The opening kill (spoiler)

Moving on… There was a major controversy involving an article that said that actress Bella Thorne (Nina Patterson) would be remaking the first scene of Scream on the TV show. That means that she’ll be the opening kill. But we think it is a mistake to think that this is a remake.

The Mask

Mina Lefevre, MTV’s senior vice president and head of scripted development, talked to Entertainment Weekly about the new mask:

It’s a darker, almost more grounded, evolved version of the mask. It’s something we’re constantly talking about. How did that mask become that mask? What’s its purpose? How did it evolve? If the Scream movie mask was the more plastic version, for a lack of a better description, this one is a more organic looking and frankly darker version.

Scream was incredibly iconic, but we wanted to reinvent that for TV while of course keeping all the main elements that made it so iconic, including a mask, but also the soapy teen stories, pop culture humor, the scares and the killer. We’re tonally walking that line, yet delivering the scares in a significant way. The mask was a big discussion creatively. We wanted to get a nod and a wink to what the original was, but we definitely wanted to make it more on par with what horror is now, which is darker.

As you can imagine, this made some fans very angry.

The leaked script

Bleeding Cool managed to get their hands on some pages of the pilot. Written by Jill Blotevogel and titled “Red Roses”, it looks promising and funny. Dread Central made an interesting analysis:

Much like the 1996 film, the series will kick off with the murder of a young girl and her boyfriend, the brutal crime opening up a window to the town’s troubled past.

Though the script makes no mention of Woodsboro or any of the characters the film franchise introduced us to, there is a new character named Noah who is clearly inspired by Scream‘s Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy), as he’s a horror fan who seems to know a bit more than the other characters do.

Along with Noah will seemingly come a heavy emphasis on self-referential humor, which has become a trademark of the franchise. “Slasher movies burn bright and fast,” he remarks at one point in the script. “TV needs to stretch things out.”

Not surprisingly, there also looks to be an emphasis on social media and modern technology, as the script is littered with things like iPhones, tablets, and even a spoof of Siri wherein the robotic helper dials Pottery Barn when one of the characters is desperately trying to reach 911. It reads like Scream for the social media age, so to speak.

But what about the killer? There’s been much talk about whether or not the iconic “Ghostface” mask will be worn in the series, though the script doesn’t do much in terms of answering any of those questions. The only description of the killer indicates that he’s wearing a “terrifying mask” so your guess is as good as ours.

The series will center on a YouTube viral video gone wrong, which leads to adverse repercussions for 16-year-old Aubrey Jensen. Daughter of Pastor Jensen, Aubrey is filmed hooking up with a female friend at the start of the pilot, the video soon uploaded online for all to see.
