The unveiling of NECA’s Ghost Face action figure prototype for Scream 4 has set the fandom abuzz. While many fans appreciated the effort, others voiced strong opinions across forums and social media. In a recent interview with Scream Franchise Examiner, R.J. Torbert, Fun World’s Licensor Director, addressed the passionate feedback and shared insights into the design process.
Torbert praised NECA’s approach and explained the reasoning behind releasing a prototype image to the public:
“First, I would like to congratulate NECA on a job well done. As I have mentioned in earlier interviews, there are reasons for things unfolding the way they have, and I extol their ability and determination on this project. By releasing a prototype image instead of a production figure, they showed appreciation and respect to the fans, which I think is terrific.”
Acknowledging the criticism, Torbert took full responsibility for the design decisions:
“Yes, there has been some criticism, which everyone is entitled to when giving their opinion. Comments like ‘Who let this pass?’—the answer is me. The buck stops here at this office when it comes to Ghost Face and approvals. I was in constant contact with NECA throughout the stages, including while I was in Hong Kong. They are a terrific group of hardworking people who I think did something original with the mixture of cloth and plastic.”
Despite the divided opinions, Torbert expressed confidence in the figure’s success:
“I’m confident the sales results will make it a very successful item and quite possibly a collector’s piece.”
