Matthew Lillard Talks Fear of “Screwing It Up” in Scream 7

Matthew Lillard says he’s terrified to return in Scream 7. Plus, new set photos tease a curious cameo you didn’t see coming.

On March 30, 2025, fans attending 90s Con, produced by That’s4Entertainment, were treated to a Scream reunion panel featuring original cast legends David Arquette, Matthew Lillard, Jamie Kennedy, and Skeet Ulrich, joined by Scream VI star Dermot Mulroney. And while the talk was filled with nostalgia, it didn’t shy away from the future — especially the highly anticipated Scream 7, directed by Kevin Williamson.

The panel was moderated by Breanne L. Heldman of People Magazine, and tackled everything from behind-the-scenes memories to the legacy of the franchise and what fans might expect from the next chapter. And yes — the return of Ghostface was in the air.

Adding to the star power, Rose McGowan (Tatum) and Tori Spelling, who hilariously played the Stab version of Sidney Prescott, were also in attendance during the weekend, making it a dream lineup for longtime fans of both the films and their meta-universe.

But it was Matthew Lillard, whose return as Stu Macher was recently confirmed, who shared the most brutally honest moment of the panel.

“I hope I don’t f it up for everyone.”

When asked about how it feels to step back into the franchise after so long, Lillard didn’t hold back:

I will say, I can’t say anything about it, obviously. But I am very excited and slightly terrified to be back because all I can do is really screw up a legacy that we have.

I could really suck, and so that’s my fear. My fear is that I come back and sort of punish something that I could never have touched and been just fine. I hope I don’t f it up for everyone.

Classic Lillard — self-aware, vulnerable, and completely in tune with the reverence fans hold for the original.

As the excitement for Scream 7 builds, one thing is certain: if this panel proved anything, it’s that the heart of the franchise remains intact — and the legacy continues, fueled by the love of its fans and the passion of its cast.

Lillard’s Whiskey Makes a Cameo in Scream 7

While Matthew Lillard’s return as Stu Macher is stealing headlines, a sharp-eyed fan caught another Lillard-related surprise on the set of Scream 7: a bottle of his Quest’s End Whiskey.

The Dungeons & Dragons-inspired whiskey brand, co-founded by Lillard through Find Familiar Spirits, is a hit among gamers and collectors alike. Launched in partnership with Blue Run Spirits veterans, the premium bourbon line taps into Lillard’s lifelong love for tabletop fantasy—something that resonates with fans of his many cult roles.

And now, it seems, the potion bottle has crossed into the Scream universe.

Our dear friend Jazmine Torrez, who was also a featured extra in Scream (2022), visited the set of Scream 7 last month and shared some exclusive behind-the-scenes photos with us. Among them? A blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shot of Quest’s End quietly sitting in the background of a production scene—marking an unexpected but welcome cameo from Lillard’s other passion project.

Will it survive the final cut? Time will tell. But fans of Stu—and spirits—will want to keep their eyes peeled when the film drops on March 27, 2026.
