SCREAM 5 has a different direction from its predecessors, and that’s a good thing, according to Kevin Williamson. The screenwriter and the original cast of the 1996 cult classic reunited this weekend on a nostalgic online panel via Looped Live.
When asked, Williamson (who is producing the fifth chapter and passed the script torch to Guy Busick and James Vanderbilt) couldn’t answer what would be the new rules for today’s scary movies. And, of course, fans couldn’t help themselves on keep trying to extract brand new info on the latest instalment of the franchise.
Kevin, Neve Campbell and David Arquette didn’t share anything about the plot on the SCREAM REUNION, but the tone of the movie was hinted and underlined:
“No deconstruction. No self-awareness. Just the opposite of what we did. I do worry that the franchise kind of wears itself out with all the meta and the deconstruction and there’s only so many times you can do it. So many people have since then done horror films like it, or in the vein of. So you do worry that it kind of runs its course.”
The fourth movie and how it performed on the box office, back in 2011, was probably the evidence Hollywood needed to end the intense deconstruction that ignited the whole meta text and subtext of the Wes Craven golden era.
“What I love about the new SCREAM is that it does take a fresh approach. It’s this beautifully sort of fresh new movie, but it also has this nostalgic factor that runs through it. That to me was a perfect blend of how to do the next SCREAM“.
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet were highly praised for their work:
“The script is great. I am very happy with the direction they have taken with Sidney“, told Neve Campbell, who already finished her scenes for the new movie with the Radio Silence collective.
“I’m blown away by the directors, and I was really nervous because nobody is Wes Craven. I was really hesitant to even jump on board and be a part of it, and boy… am I glad I did because I think it’s going to make Wes proud“, predicted Williamson.
The filming of SCREAM 5 ends tomorrow, November 17th.
