Scream (2022): Interview with Jasmin Savoy Brown

Jasmin Savoy Brown proudly wears many badges of honor: Woman, Black, Queer—and now, Scream Queen.

When Jasmin Savoy Brown was cast in Scream (2022), alongside a fresh lineup of talent joining directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, it was clear this wasn’t just another sequel. It wouldn’t be just a “cash-in on all the movie murder hoopla.” This film wasn’t about cashing in on the franchise’s legacy—it was about elevating it. Jasmin’s casting signaled a commitment to showcasing rising stars and telling new stories that resonate.

If you’ve seen her in The Leftovers, Sound of Violence, or Yellowjackets (arguably the best show airing right now, coinciding with Scream 5’s release), you already know what she brings to the screen: undeniable talent and depth.

Learn more about Jasmin and her character, Mindy, in our exclusive video interview:

Representation That Matters

Jasmin’s role as Mindy Meeks-Martin, niece of the iconic Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy), is more than just a passing of the torch—it’s a leap forward. As a queer Black woman, she provides representation that’s both meaningful and powerful, especially in a genre where such voices have often been underrepresented. Seeing Jasmin proudly wearing an LGBTQIA+ pin on the film’s poster brought a deeply personal and emotional moment to many fans, myself included.

A Joy to Meet

Through the entire marketing campaign, Jasmin was approachable, genuine, and delightful on social media. When I was granted the opportunity to speak with her, it felt like meeting someone truly special. In our chat, she shared insights into her character Mindy, the pressures of stepping into such an iconic franchise, and her experience working alongside the talented cast and crew.
