We’re all familiar with the chilling visage of Ghost Face in ‘Scream.’ But few know its full origin story, unearthed during our exploration into the film’s history. The iconic mask was first spotted by Marianne Maddalena during a location scout. Its eerie appeal was undeniable, and it quickly captivated the film’s creative team. However, securing the rights to use the mask was not immediate.
In response, director Wes Craven turned to the talents of Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger from KNB, a renowned special effects company, to craft a similar design. During the making of ‘Scream: The Inside Story,’ Crash Cunningham of the art department revisited some of these early concepts, which were initially drafted before Fun World officially released Ghost Face for the movie.
Although only the “Casper” concept made it into the documentary, a recent intriguing development has brought these early designs back into the limelight. Mike Aspinwall, a friend of our website, has shared these rare pieces with us, offering fans a deeper glimpse into the creative process behind one of cinema’s most iconic masks.
