Love to Hate You: Nico Tortorella Talks Scream 4

Nico Tortorella opens up about his Scream 4 role, working with Wes Craven, and filming alongside Emma Roberts. Discover what makes Trevor Sheldon so hateable!

Discovered by Joel Schumacher during the casting of Twelve, Nico Tortorella is set to steal the spotlight—and maybe some hearts—in Scream 4. His portrayal of Trevor Sheldon, described as the “guy everybody loves to hate,” promises to be one of the film’s standout performances.

In recent interviews with Total Film UK (March 2011) and Noir (January/February edition), Tortorella shared insights about the role, the audition process, and working with horror maestro Wes Craven.

Speaking to Total Film UK, Tortorella likened Trevor to Skeet Ulrich’s Billy Loomis from the original Scream:

He is an asshole, off the bat. Again playing the asshole! But once you see him one-on-one, he’s got a big heart. He’s most like the Skeet character from the first Scream.

In his interview with Noir, he shared more about the audition process and his excitement:

When I got the call telling me I was officially part of Scream 4, there was screaming, crying, and a lot of swearing. I mean, what can I say? It was unf**kingbelievable!

Behind the Scenes of Scream 4

Tortorella also revealed that he auditioned five times, traveling between Los Angeles and New York, to secure the role. At one point, he was told he might be too tall for the part, but persistence paid off.

When asked about the experience of filming, Tortorella had nothing but praise for the cast and crew:

It was one of the best summers of my life! It was like walking into a family who accepted the younger crew with open arms.

Having worked with Emma Roberts and Rory Culkin previously on Twelve, Tortorella appreciated the camaraderie on set. And when it came to Wes Craven?

He’s a genius. He has this insane vocabulary that blows your mind, but at the same time, he’s a little kid who loves making horror movies!

Trevor Sheldon: Love Him or Hate Him?

Tortorella described Trevor as “the guy everybody loves to hate,” noting his brash personality but hidden depth. While Scream 4 is packed with iconic and rising talent, Trevor’s complexity and Tortorella’s nuanced performance might make him one of the most memorable characters of this new chapter.

Despite not being a big fan of slasher films before, Tortorella admitted:

After working on this movie, I definitely have a newfound respect for the genre.

Nico Tortorella is ready to make an impression when Scream 4 slashes into theaters this April.
