Las Vegas, Nev. – Film buffs and horror fans have a new book to scream about. New independent publishing imprint Stinger Books announced Scream Deconstructed: An Unauthorized Analysis is set for an October 25, 2011 online release on Amazon. Scream Deconstructed is the first book about all four Scream films. The 160-page nonfiction book is already available for pre-order ahead of its release, for a price of US$9.99.
Scream Deconstructed aims to critically review and analyze the themes and characters of each film in the postmodern Scream series and what they have to say about film, the media, sex, and society in general. According to author Scott Kessinger, “Critics all seem to agree that the Scream movies had a lot going on under the surface, but there’s nowhere near as much literature about them as you might think. It inspired me to try to fill that void. There’s books like this for Star Wars, for the Simpsons, and now it’s Scream‘s turn.”
Kessinger, a freelance journalist, gained the attention of series fans when articles he had written about the films sparked discussion on the internet. Kessinger says the feedback from fans encouraged him to write the book.
The Scream series of films started in 1996 and quickly became some of the most influential horror movies in film history. The latest, Scream 4, was released earlier this year. Although Scream Deconstructed is not licensed or commissioned by The Weinstein Company – the rightsholders of the films – or filmmakers Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson, Kessinger hopes the book becomes a definitive book for fans. ”I was very careful to respect the rights of the owners,” he said. ”I made sure that it’s a nonfiction book about Scream, not something that simply resells the films’ content in a different package.”
Stinger Books plans to support Scream Deconstructed‘s release with an online advertising campaign, including the book’s own website,screamdeconstructed.com.
