Wes Craven hints at the odds of Scream 5 happening and explains the step-by-step process of developing a Scream movie. Fans, keep your fingers crossed!
During the promotion of the Scream 4 DVD and Blu-Ray release, the inevitable question about Scream 5 surfaced once again. The franchise’s legendary director, Wes Craven, addressed the possibility of a fifth installment, leaving fans cautiously optimistic.
“The odds are that there will be [a Scream 5],” Craven stated. “It is something that Bob Weinstein wants to do. He tends to do what he wants to do. So I am inclined to think that there will be [another sequel].”
Will Wes Craven Be Involved?
While hopeful about the franchise’s continuation, Craven was noncommittal about his own involvement:
“Whether I will be a part of it or not? I don’t know. My contract gives me the first look. If they show me something that is really wonderful? Of course, I will be a part of it.”
How a Scream Movie Is Made
Craven shed light on the development process behind a Scream film, starting with collaboration between Bob Weinstein and Kevin Williamson, the franchise’s writer:
- Pitch Phase: “Typically, Bob Weinstein or Kevin Williamson will come up with a new idea and pitch it to one another. If they both like it, they’ll develop it into an overarching concept.”
- Director’s Involvement: Craven explained he only gets involved once there’s a script or a clear idea: “I don’t want to be involved until the script is there. That makes me not a part of the original process, of banging out the idea.”
- Creative Collaboration: Craven recalled his first meeting with Williamson for Scream 4, where the writer sketched out ideas for Scream 5 and Scream 6: “The idea was that we were doing the first in a new trilogy. We had to wait to see if we made enough money on each film to make the next one viable.”
What’s Next for Wes Craven?
While the future of Scream 5 remains uncertain, Craven is keeping busy. He is currently working on both a comic book series and a book project—ventures that have fans curious about what’s next from the horror maestro.
A New Trilogy?
The potential for Scream 5 hinges on financial viability and a compelling script. For now, the franchise lives at the “possibility level,” as Craven puts it. Fans, keep your fingers crossed!
