Months ago, fans of Kevin Williamson—and Scream—took notice when news surfaced about his involvement in a new supernatural drama for CW Television (Warner Bros.). Initially described as a Vampire Diaries spin-off, the untitled project was reportedly centered on a group investigating paranormal phenomena. The announcement naturally sparked concern about the future of the Scream franchise.
Here’s what Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva had to say at the time:
“Vampire Diaries co-creator/executive producer Kevin Williamson is working on a new supernatural drama project, envisioned as a potential companion for the CW’s flagship vampire drama. The untitled project… focuses on a group of people who investigate paranormal happenings. Williamson’s fellow Vampire Diaries co-creator/executive producer Julie Plec is in talks to come onboard and co-write the project with him.”
Fast-forward to now, and the situation has taken an interesting turn. According to recent reports, Williamson has left this paranormal project to work on another adaptation for CW based on L.J. Smith’s The Secret Circle.
This new series follows 16-year-old Cassie, who moves from Southern California to New England, only to discover that she’s a witch. While unrelated to The Vampire Diaries, The Secret Circle feels like a thematic cousin, likely to attract fans of supernatural teen dramas.
For Scream fans, though, the question remains: What does this mean for the future of the franchise? With Williamson’s growing list of TV commitments, including The Vampire Diaries and now The Secret Circle, the fate of the Scream sequels feels increasingly uncertain.
