The rumors are true! This afternoon, MTV confirmed plans for a TV series based on the Scream franchise. The announcement comes as the success of shows like Hannibal and Bates Motel—both inspired by classic horror films—reignites interest in adapting iconic movies for television.
According to a press release distributed ahead of MTV’s upfront presentation, the network is collaborating with Dimension Films to “reinvent the successful horror-comedy franchise that spawned three sequels and unleashed Ghostface to a legion of unsuspecting fans.”
Wes Craven in Talks
Excitingly, Wes Craven, the legendary director of the Scream films, is reportedly in discussions to direct the pilot. While no casting details have been announced, the series is scheduled for a summer 2014 debut. MTV stated that it is working with “various writers” to bring the project to life.
With its rich history of meta-commentary on the horror genre, Scream is a prime candidate for reinvention. If Craven signs on to direct, the pilot could carry the authentic tone and style fans have come to love.
