New Hope: Kevin Williamson on Scream 5 and His Clash with TWC

Kevin Williamson discusses the origins of Scream 4, his creative clash with Bob Weinstein, and hints at a possible Scream 5.

Kevin Williamson has rekindled fans’ excitement with a glimmer of hope for Scream 5. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, the series creator addressed the possibility of continuing the saga:

“Let’s just get through Scream 4! If people really respond to the film, then yes, there are more twists and turns.”

This tease is sure to ignite speculation among fans eager for more twists in the Scream universe.

A Rocky Road to Scream 4

Williamson also delved into the origins of Scream 4, explaining how the idea came to him after reflecting on the story he originally planned for /:

“One day I’m just sitting around and I go, ‘Oh wait — I think — oh my God, I think I have it.’”

The original concept for Scream 3 would have returned to Woodsboro with an entire film crew shooting on location, but it was ultimately shelved. Revisiting Woodsboro for Scream 4 felt like the perfect opportunity to continue the journey of Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell).

“Once I figured out where Sidney was today, who dies and who doesn’t, I said, ‘Okay maybe now I can have a conversation with Bob [Weinstein].’”

The Infamous Disagreement

The interview also addressed Williamson’s creative clash with Bob Weinstein during the production of Scream 4. Both men wanted the film to be perfect, leading to heated disagreements:

“Everyone was second-guessing everything because everyone wanted it to be so perfect,” Williamson recalls.

While the arguments were initially reported as a major fallout, Williamson clarified that it was the result of their shared passion for the franchise.

“The one thing that Bob and I connect on very basically…is we’re passionate. And it is that passion that allows you to make a movie where he will believe in you and trust in you, and it’s also that passion that can cause fights.”

Ultimately, Williamson had to juggle his commitments between Scream 4 and his work on The Vampire Diaries, which had contractual priority. Despite the challenges, Williamson affirmed his deep love for the Scream franchise:

Scream is so special to me I’m never going to disavow it.”
