The early box office numbers for Scream 4 are creating a whirlwind of mixed reactions. Initially, Deadline‘s Nikki Finke reported on Friday afternoon that the movie was “overperforming” and predicted an optimistic $30 million opening weekend.
However, as Friday’s grosses rolled in, the tone shifted dramatically. Updated projections hinted at a softer performance, with Scream 4 potentially struggling to meet even the lower-end expectations of $20-25 million.
Finke’s revised assessment pointed to possible franchise fatigue and changing audience dynamics. The Miramax/Dimension/Weinstein Co. release brought back the original team—director Wes Craven, writer Kevin Williamson (who left mid-production due to creative conflicts with Bob Weinstein), and the beloved trio of Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Neve Campbell. New blood, including Hayden Panettiere and Emma Roberts, added freshness, but it seems the nostalgia factor may not have been enough to revive the franchise to its full potential.
According to Deadline:
“Maybe the entire franchise should have been reworked. The result is that Scream as a franchise has just a little life left in it even though the Weinsteins kept insisting for the past year that it had a lot.”
The stark contrast between early optimism and tempered weekend predictions leaves fans and industry watchers eager to see how the movie will ultimately perform as more data comes in.
