Dawson Leery would have loved this. After all, much like how everything connects back to Kevin Bacon, as noted in Scream 2, Steven Spielberg’s influence makes this casting a six-degree inevitability. The Dawson’s Creek protagonist, another creation of Kevin Williamson, was famously obsessed with Spielberg. Now, in a fitting twist, Sam Rechner—who made waves as the morally complex high schooler in Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, alongside Michelle Williams—steps into Scream 7.
New to horror, Rechner’s unpredictability aligns perfectly with a franchise built on subverting expectations. His fresh perspective and intensity could make him a standout in the ever-evolving Scream universe.
Seemingly poised to deliver a rebooted generational showdown, Scream 7 will feature Sam Rechner alongside Neve Campbell and rising stars Isabel May, Celeste O’Connor, Mckenna Grace, and Asa Germann. The slasher franchise continues its legacy under the direction of Kevin Williamson, with Guy Busick penning the script.
Principal photography is expected to start in January 2025, and Scream 7 will most likely be shot on the Lionsgate sound stages in Atlanta.
So, who is Sam Rechner in this story? A bystander caught in Ghostface’s crosshairs, or a character who tilts the game in a bold new direction? Personally, I think Rechner—at least in the photo accompanying this article—brings the energy of another Williamson creation: Barry from I Know What You Did Last Summer. Let’s hope he fares better!
