The Night They Came Home: Scream Stars Join the CBS Watch Party

David Arquette, W. Earl Brown, Courteney Cox & Heather Matarazzo joined Scream fans for a CBS watch party, sharing behind-the-scenes stories & Wes Craven tributes!

Sunday night was a special one for Scream fans. Not only did CBS host a Scream watch party, but the stars themselves joined in, taking to Twitter to interact with fans, share behind-the-scenes stories, and honor Wes Craven’s legacy.

Fun fact: October 25 wasn’t just a night for Scream—it also marked the 42nd anniversary of Halloween (1978) and the second anniversary of Halloween (2018).

The guest list? David Arquette, W. Earl Brown, Courteney Cox, and Heather Matarazzo, all reminiscing about their time in Woodsboro and beyond.

Wes Craven: The Master at Work

One of the main topics of the night was the influence of Wes Craven on the cast and crew.

“I remember Wes saying before we started filming, ‘We are making a satire—a genre satire. However, never fall into the trap of playing funny. If this film isn’t scary, it will not be funny. I learned that lesson on Vampire in Brooklyn.’”
W. Earl Brown, October 26, 2020

Arquette also revealed one of Craven’s most secretive directing techniques:

“Wes never let us meet Roger L. Jackson, the voice of Ghostface, despite him being on set and on the phone for the calls. I haven’t met him to this day.”

Another brilliant detail? According to David Arquette, Craven made several characters wear the same black boots so that anyone could be a suspect, saved Dewey’s life, a lot:

Wes put me in that last scene to keep me alive. I died in the script. I love and Miss you Wes!

And, added a few visual puns onscreen:

Ice Scream – get it. Another great Wes addition

Kenny’s Death: Too Disturbing?

W. Earl Brown, who played Gale’s ill-fated cameraman, revealed an interesting piece of trivia about his character’s death:

“The throat cut had to be trimmed by Wes to avoid an X rating. The note was ‘the look on his face is too disturbing.’ Wes’ response? ‘It’s murder. It’s supposed to be disturbing.’”

And speaking of Kenny’s death—the windshield shot was far more dangerous than it looked:

“The first take on the Windshield of Blood scene, the driver hadn’t properly prepped. She was supposed to go half-speed… She didn’t. She floored it.”

“The camera inside fell over backward. On the roof, I went flying over the side, headfirst. Luckily, our stunt coordinator had tied one of my ankles to the roof rack… I grabbed a windshield wiper, and he held onto my belt.”

“Luckily, I didn’t actually get thrown off the roof, but I came terrifyingly close.”

Happy Days & Hollywood Friendships

Between behind-the-scenes insights, the stars also reflected on the friendships they built while filming.

Arquette shared a heartfelt memory of meeting Henry Winkler (Principal Himbry) on set:

“I told him how much it meant to me that he shook my hand years before after a live taping of Happy Days. And he said, ‘I’d like to shake your hand again.’ He left a lasting impression on me on how to be kind.”

He also credited Scream for one of the most important things in his life:

“I love the scenes with Courteney Cox as Gale—not only because she’s a brilliant actress and they’re all flirty and stuff—but because it led to Coco, our daughter, coming into our lives.”

Gale’s Infamous Bangs & Meta Commentary

Courteney Cox kept things lighthearted, poking fun at Gale Weathers’ iconic bangs:

“Gale Weathers with a blown-out Rachel + bangs.”
“Acting with bangs touching your eyeballs? Never easy.”

And when Sidney punches Gale in Scream, Cox couldn’t resist the meta moment:

“I actually did send her a copy.”

Heather Matarazzo: The Meta Queen We Deserve

Heather Matarazzo, who played Randy Meeks’ sister, Martha in Scream 3 and is rumored to be on Scream 5, joined in with some hilarious observations:

Billy Loomis is the kind of guy I would’ve bummed a smoke from in high school. Then I’d say, ‘I can’t believe I bummed a smoke from a serial killer.’”

Randy Meeks would’ve had such a killer movie podcast if he had lived long enough.”

“Randy Meeks truly is my brother from the same mother.”

The Real Ghostface

David Arquette revealed just how much detail goes into Ghostface’s look:

“The real Ghostface mask and costume is so cool and detailed. They always have a member of the wardrobe department dedicated to making sure it’s perfect. I love the subtle shimmer to the fabric.”
