During the Zurich Film Festival, The Weinstein Company made waves with its statement about the future of the Scream franchise. While confirming plans to close the film saga with one last movie, the studio dropped a controversial detail about MTV’s Scream: The Series.
“The series is supposed to represent a new beginning and also pursue a supernatural direction,” the company announced.
Bloody Disgusting clarified that there will be no overlap between the TV series and the film franchise, suggesting the show aims to carve its own path. However, the idea of introducing supernatural elements to the Scream universe has left fans divided.
The Scream films have always thrived on the terror of a masked killer grounded in reality, so venturing into the supernatural feels like stepping into a bad Stab sequel—or worse, a fever dream.
Supernatural elements might work for other horror franchises, but Scream fans value its blend of realism and meta-humor. Could this decision alienate the core audience? Or will it find a way to merge the new tone with the slasher’s signature wit?
