This announcement was long overdue. The reporter left for dead comes through and, once again, saves the day. Courteney Cox is officially stepping back into Gale Weathers’ fancy shoes for Scream 7, as revealed by Variety‘s Marc Malkin.

While fans had little doubt Cox would reprise her role, the confirmation still feels like a relief—especially after Gale narrowly escaped Ghostface in Scream VI, just before the third act.

Back in September, Cox teased her potential involvement during an interview with Malkin, saying, “I’m not officially signed on. I’m not, but there will be a ‘Scream 7.’”

It wasn’t a matter of if but when. Cox expressed her enthusiasm for returning, likely waiting for a script that ensures Gale’s storyline has the depth and thrill it deserves—one that lets her go in with a bang. Or, knowing Gale, with styled bangs.

What’s Next for Gale?

Throughout the franchise, Gale has occasionally wrestled with the consequences of her success, wondering if her sensationalized books cemented Ghostface in the minds of her audience and Stab fans. Could Scream 7 explore a more reflective side of the fiery journalist, especially after Dewey (David Arquette) was killed and her own brush with death in the last chapter?

Or will Gale’s relentless ambition draw her into investigating yet another string of Ghostface attacks? In Scream VI, Kirby (Hayden Panettiere) hinted she was investigating Ghostface-related cases, while a TV news report pointed out a dramatic rise in mask sales. Gale’s knack for getting to the heart of the story means she’s bound to be in the thick of it once again.

Filming for Scream 7 is expected to commence in January 2025, with production likely taking place on Lionsgate’s sound stages in Atlanta. The much-anticipated sequel is slated to hit theaters worldwide on February 27, 2026, giving fans plenty of time to speculate about what lies ahead for Gale and the rest of the cast.
