Two days after Melissa Barrera was announced as part of Scream 5, Deadline now reports that Jenna Ortega has also joined the cast of the highly anticipated sequel.
Best known for her roles in You and Jane the Virgin, Ortega is no stranger to psychological thrills, having played Ellie Alves in Netflix’s stalker series. Now, she’s trading serial killers for slasher terror as she enters the world of Scream.
Interestingly, both Ortega and Barrera are Latina actresses, which could suggest that their characters are related. If previous rumored casting leaks hold any truth, Scream 5 may feature two sisters—Sara and Teresa—as central figures in the story. Additionally, one of these new characters is reportedly representing the LGBTQ+ community, adding another layer of representation to the franchise.
With her You experience and a résumé that also includes the upcoming The Babysitter: Killer Queen and Insidious: Chapter 2, Ortega has already proven she can handle high-stakes horror. Will she be a final girl in the making or Ghostface’s next target?
One thing is certain: with Ortega and Barrera on board, Scream 5 is assembling a new generation of victims, suspects, and survivors.
Production begins soon in Wilmington, North Carolina, with more cast announcements expected in the coming weeks.
