After what appeared to be a century without fresh new content from the SCREAM saga, a ton of SCREAM 6 content dropped this morning, along with the highly anticipated teaser trailer.
The first reveal was a teaser poster, making SCREAM VI the official title. Yes, in roman numerals, as in a lot of sequels and franchises from the 80s. A fun fact is that some countries officially will use six as a numeral while marketing the film.
The other noticeable detail is the mask on the bill. A worn-out mask, aged Halloween 2018 style, that I initially assumed to be a Zombie Ghost Face mask (which could make some sense, ever since they’ve used the chrome version in STA8).
But, it isn’t a simple zombified GF mask, as Ghost Face Masks collector Tim Wagstaff, from Ghostface.co.UK, identified. It’s a mask mold from an EU Stamp edition, that had a customization process over it. This led us to an article with the first image that EW scored, with a quote from director Tyler Gillett:
“It will all make sense in the context that you see it in the movie. That was another one of the really interesting risks and creative approaches in this movie. It’s meta in a different way, and the mask very much factors into that.”
“It was not an arbitrary choice,” added director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, implying this specific mask might carry some very organic meaning to the plot.
If you liked the poster and want to enter a GIVEAWAY chance to get yourself a copy, try it on Instagram or Twitter.
The NYC subway also seems to be a character in this film, since it may be the set to a crucial scene: our terrified group of victims is stuck in a car with dozens of Ghost Face trick-or-treaters during Halloween. But which one is the real killer?
This scene could be holding a new record on the number of references to other scary movies, because of the Halloween costumes: Ready or Not (as we’ve told you here), Stab 6, Bride of Chucky, Cursed, Return of the Living Dead, The Babadook, The Exorcist, Hellraiser, Us, Friday the 13th, Midsommar, The Ring and Nightmare on Elm Street are seen in here.
And, for the eagle-eyed, it’s also possible to spot Hayden Panettiere and Jack Champion.
What about Jasmin Savoy Brown‘s very threatening encounter with Ghostface? Is our favorite movie expert in trouble? The Meeks family will have to be extra careful in this sequel. You know what eventually happens to the expert.
SCREAM VI opens on March 10, 2023.
